But the outside world (with its prophetic pandemics and political intrigue) intrudes only rarely into the book, which is mostly about two young people suddenly alone and scared on a South Pacific island. There's death, and pain, sometimes a lot of both, but there's also strength and love and unity.

This is the audio book from libro. fm, but Bezos has it at Audible, and there are paper copies of it at any bookstore new or (often) used. _Nation_, by Terry Pratchett. It's set in a world more like our world than Discworld, in the mid-19th century range.

I met you at DragonCon several years ago. Because of that, I enjoyed the Fifth Season Trilogy. But then The City We Became was one of the best books I’ve ever read!
I like what you bring to fantasy and a new kind of hard sci-fi. Real people and real characters who haven’t been represented before.
