"That's just regular old living."

I might nerd out about music, books, movies, maybe a little paleontology; nothing to get excited about.
Book #11 for the year is Gideon The Ninth. I was excited for this and I ended up enjoying it, but not without some reservations.

Brandon Sparks's review of Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb, #1)
3/5: In many ways, this is a definite breath of fresh air, and it's not hard to see why it ended up with so much hype and fanfare upon release. I did enjoy a lot about it, especially Muir's heavily sa...

And here's book #10 - Hammers On Bone was really heavy on the creepy noir vibes but I think it caught me at the wrong time; couldn't quite get on its wavelength.

Brandon Sparks's review of Hammers on Bone (Persons Non Grata, #1)
2/5: The description of this sounded interesting enough, but unfortunately I never managed to get on its wavelength. The combination of noir-style crime fiction and cosmic (very specifically Lovecraft...

Made it book #9 of 2025 - absolutely tore through The Cabin At The End Of The World. It's another winner for Tremblay.

Brandon Sparks's review of The Cabin at the End of the World
4/5: This impressed me a lot, in particular as an extended exercise in almost unbearable tension. Tremblay brings his considerable skills to bear here in creating a diabolically simple yet effective s...

Finished book #8 for the year: Billy Summers was another win for recent Stephen King. This felt like a bit of a departure with some surprising twists, and it worked really well for me.

Brandon Sparks's review of Billy Summers
4/5: At this point, saying that I enjoyed a Stephen King book is stating something very obvious; it bears emphasizing how consistent his recent works have been, though. This one is no exception. I fel...

Book #7 for 2025: Gardens Of The Moon by Steven Erikson. I had a good time with this, mostly, though it doesn't quite sidestep all the pitfalls of epic fantasy series-starters.

Brandon Sparks's review of Gardens of the Moon (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, #1)
3/5: This has a lot going for it, but still couldn't quite overcome a lot of typical fantasy series-starter issues. I did enjoy it, though, and I have to say its reputation of being an especially conf...
