“Specialist” is such a better term than “expert”.

Former describes the balance of one’s focus whereas the latter is always relative to some less informed group on the given subject.

There are 5 Canadian-born Nobel Prize winning economists, but Peter Howitt is the only one who spent a significant part of his academic career in Canada. He was a prof at University of Western Ontario from the 1970s to the 1990s and is a past President of the Canadian Economics Association

Because I spent way too much time on this today - 🇨🇦 Beveridge curve (2006-2025). The data is mostly from StatCan. The curves are just simple approximations (I drew a curve).

If you had asked me in January "what will happen to CAD/USD if the new US administration imposes massive tariffs" I would not have guessed "surged over 0.72".

In Jan, I talked to someone who does int'l economics and their baseline was 40% of the tariffs would be offset by *lower* exchange rate.

How Tariffs Affect Trade Deficits...

... a new paper with amazing trade economist Arnaud Costinot.

Many politicians and the general public expect tariffs to reduce imports lower imports and thus work to close a trade deficit.

Economists typically say "not so fast"...

One of the best non-PhD students I’ve supervised just chose a European PhD program over very good US programs—he didn’t want to face the risks of staying here as a Chinese national. The US is losing top talent due to poor leadership.

Forever SMDH about the people who drool over the 'competitive' US tax structure but blithely ignore their 6% of GDP deficit.

Yeah we could do cool tax cuts too if we ran an extra 4% of GDP deficit! Like, that's about an extra $120B/yr of tax cuts.

This is a good read from @thelogic.co on internal trade barriers. While it is worthy to lower barriers, it is not trivial.

A lot of it is health and safety regs of professions; goods. Passporting means you accept lowest standard, which you have to be careful about.

Inside the great untangling of Canada’s internal trade mess - The Logic
Fixing internal trade has been presented as a silver bullet to fix Canada’s productivity crisis and protect the country against the ongoing trade war. If only it were that simple.
