a quick pivot, today’s WIP is a less serious one as it’s basically a gender bent Tokyo mew mew that literally no one asked for.

“Okay, I really tried to be separate from my phone, but Owen and Alice are talking about trading cards again,” she said, and she walked out of Noah’s view, and proceeded to rummage through what he assumed was her backpack. “Uh—how’s Noah, by the way?”

“Ask him yourself,” Martin told her.

In a split second, Noah found himself embraced, almost smothered, but the ache it triggered fell to the back of his mind. It took him a second to respond, to return the gesture, and only then did she seem to exhale. He felt her tense, and she pulled back, her face reddening and her eyes on the floor.

“Sorry, I’m sorry, I was just—“ she bit her lip, shifting from a kneeling position to a sitting one, her back against the coffee table. “You were…out for a really long time.”

“And you’re still here?” He asked. If she noticed his dental predicament when he spoke, she didn’t mention it.

“We all are,” she said, “we couldn’t just go home after…after everything.”

The ache and the telltale prickling returned for a second. “After everything.”

Surprisingly “my roommate is a little cloud demon who is totally going to kill me” is not the most common anxiety response to attending a new school but it DOES happen and it IS valid

(using synonym “block/blocked” for today’s #WIPSnips prompt)

“Yes,” Tor said. He noticed a sliver of light coming from room 302—his room. The door was open slightly. TBA must have already arrived. He decided he should put his trunk in the room before getting his own key, and pushed his way in. The temperature seemed to drop slightly as soon as he crossed the threshold, and looking toward the window, he saw it was blocked by a very long, dark shadow.
The shadow moved. It was not a shadow.
There was a Merikh in his dorm room.
He had only just arrived, and there was a Merikh in his dorm room. He’d never seen one up close, his people didn’t like children being around when they came, but there was undoubtedly a Merikh—shadowy, smoky, with glowing blue orbs for eyes, staring right at him.
Tor screamed. He didn’t mean to, but he did, and he jumped back, knocking into the large desk in the corner. He heard a similar, echo-y sound just after, and the Merikh disappeared. It took a second for Tor to notice two blue lights reappearing underneath one of the beds across the room.
Was it…hiding from him?
Never mind. Never mind. A Merikh was here, which meant only one thing.
“I knew it,” Tor muttered, “I knew it, I knew it—I left and now I’m marked for death. I shouldn’t have—I never—”
He couldn’t finish. The words were like bile in his mouth. Shouldn’t. Never. Things he should’ve thought of before coming all this way all alone. Really, that a Merikh was here waiting for him was incredibly convenient—it could use his surprise to let it drag him away quietly.
“Death…” the word was whispered, almost crawling across the floor instead of reaching Tor’s ears fully. Then, a much more energetic, “oh!”
The Merikh floated out from beneath the bed, taking shape once again. Tor froze once more— as much as he could without having ever truly thawed—breathing hard. He shouldn’t have come. This was a bad idea. Everyone was right, he couldn’t go anywhere by himself safely, because now he was—

“They don’t know,” he began, kicking his legs, hanging off the edge of the bed, back and forth like he was still fascinated by their existence, “how long I’ll be like this, I mean.”
“Oh.”
Zuuk always thought he was terrible with words, but Tor, somehow, might be worse. Perhaps it had a lot to do with so few people understanding him at all—he was hesitant to express things because he didn’t think he knew how. Zuuk wanted to let him know that he didn’t have to worry about that when it was just them, because Zuuk could understand, but to point it out felt wrong.
“What do I do?” He asked, “they haven’t said. Do I just…stay here until it’s fixed? I don’t want to. I’m—this is very boring already.”
“What do you want to do?”
It was a fair question, and perhaps Zuuk should have anticipated it. Maybe he had, a little bit, but he’d chosen not to think about because any answers sounded stupid.
“I want…to do school,” he said, finally, his face heating up because stupid, so stupid, “but I can’t.”
“Why not?”
That was a question he absolutely could not have prepared for. Why not, he says.
“I can’t. What would I say?” He asked, trying to outline the ridiculousness mostly but at this point he also thought Tor may have an answer.
“That you’re Zuuk, here for class.”
“…Are you insane?”
“No!” Tor said, then quieted down (while still laughing like he wasn’t talking nonsense), “listen. One time at home, my older brother was courting this girl, but for some reason they just…stopped talking to each other. Completely ignoring each other, and it was so awkward and strange that people—they were too uncomfortable to ask about what happened. I still don’t know what went on, but that’s more because I don’t care, but the thing is like…you don’t actually have to explain stuff unless someone asks, in my experience.”
“That…none of that made sense to me,” Zuuk said, after taking a few moments to be sure that yes, that was the correct response, “and what if someone does ask?”
