NEW PAPER! Some kinds of genetic mutations are more likely to arise than others. Such "biases" in mutation vary between species.
Analyzing data from 14 species, we show that this variation explains species differences in the genetics of adaptation!

How did life get to be so complicated? CSHL postdoc Bryan Gitschlag posed that question at our latest Cocktails & Chromosomes—and took the audience on a wild ride through evolutionary biology to try and find some answers.

What progressives want for trans people is safety & equal rights.
Focusing on stuff like leftwing “language policing” trivializes & misleads about what is at stake.
It seems @thirdway.bsky.social co-founder Jonathan Cowan is repeating rightwing talking points.

Not exactly science news (and not sure how I should feel about sharing good news in 2025) but just paid off my credit card today, from a balance of ~$18k a couple years ago (most of that debt was racked up during grad school, trying to live on a meager income).

But that's not the ACTUAL story.

Enjoy some of my favorite excerpts from 'Origin'...
1st: he came this close 🤏 to figuring out Mendelian genetics. If only he had put numbers on those observations!
2nd: proposed the basics of inclusive fitness theory, now a leading explanation for evolution of animal altruism.

Meet Lapis, our quaker parrot.
Before having parrots I had never appreciated how mind-bogglingly intelligent these animals are. They don’t just mindlessly mimic; as social animals, their vocal behavior has a social function and they often learn the appropriate context for the sounds they make.

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?
A lot of basic biological functions—which are widely conserved between species—involve genes that evolve rapidly and vary from species to species. What this tells us: maintaining those functions involves continual adaptive innovation!
