If we still kept snowfall records, today would have been the 3rd snowiest December 18 and tied for 48th snowiest December day at the Annette Island Airport.

Picked up 4.1 inches of snow out at the office today and 9.1 inches at the house in Metlakatla! Not a bad day for the snow lovers out there! I have measured 6.3 inches of snow so far at the WSO for December (normal is 8.1 inches), and 12.8 inches at the house in Metlakatla.

Took advantage of the break in the rain to hike up to Chester Lake Dam this afternoon to swap out the battery in the weather station. If all goes well, I should only have to swap out the battery one more time before the sun angle is high enough to start really charging the battery.

Another snow day, with just over an inch at the office and in town. The snow changed to rain during the morning as temperatures rose, leading to a slippery mess.

The lower clouds are being steered by the NW winds from the high pressure over western Canada while the higher clouds are associated with a stationary front to the south. You can see the wind shift from northerly to westerly in this afternoon’s balloon data, occurring near 750 mb (~7,900 ft today).

Snow day today here on Annette Island! I had 1 inch at the office and 2.3 inches at the house in Metlakatla.

While we didn’t feel the earthquake, all 3 of my Raspberry Shakes did! One is located in Virginia, one at WSO Annette Island, and the other in Metlakatla.

So you’re saying there’s a chance? 🤔🤪

With the nice weather the last couple of days, I was able to make a trip up Yellow Hill to check on the weather station there. It was foggy when I started the hike up, but cleared up decently while I was up there.

Kicked around some ideas and came up with the Congressional Accountability Amendment proposal. In short, pay is tied to the median income of the state they serve, term and age limits, benefits come from their state and any changes require voter approval, campaign contributions severely restricted.

This was the Windy version of the GFS the other day for my station out by the ferry terminal. 2 weeks out, so la la land…but -10F? Noooo thanks!

This evening’s 06Z special sounding…there’s a little bit of shear out there! Good thing no flights are trying to take off or land in Ketchikan.

More ice pellets…this weekend has been ice pellet filled. Pretty crazy!

Just another day in Southeast Alaska 🤪

I guessed it was around 2200ft…at least over here on Annette. Looking across the way toward Saxman from near Walden Point.

A nice evening out at one of the overlooks by Walden Point, worked on clearing some alders away from the weather station there…they grow so fast. The bay in the photos is Annette Bay, where our ferry terminal is. I enjoy watching the stronger wind gusts moving along the water.

First time I’ve ever had a weather station break 100 mph…the Chester Lake Dam station is getting a serious workout tonight!

Hiked up to Chester Lake this afternoon to check on the weather station and swap out the pipe-to-pipe clamps holding it in place for some heavier duty clamps before tomorrow’s big storm. The station has been up for 15 days and the record high wind gust for it is already 95 mph.
September 26, 2025 at 3:13 AM
Lots of rain the last couple of days…healthy stream coming down from Chester Lake and a little minor flooding on the Runway B Road.
September 20, 2025 at 9:39 PM
Looks like the station up on the dam is going to get another workout tonight. Hope it’s still there in the morning! 😅

A wide range of temperatures here on the island as it appears downsloping is keeping town warmer than other areas of the island.

Here’s Mesowest’s listed latitude/longitude, in the water by the old sea plane base. The red arrow shows where the AWOS actually is. The current seaplane base is the dock sticking out in the water to the right of the old dock. Iowa State had an easy submit location change feature, which was nice.
