When I retired we bought a house in a small seaside town with long beaches on the French coast. We're regularly there since.

The city beaches are an ideal starting point for migrants

Last year, 13 people died here

In a makeshift camp in the dunes, 5 life jackets remain, next to abandonned clothes, bags and blankets A small boat is fighting the waves close to a rocky shore, with many people already on board. Only a few of them are wearing a life jacket. 3 migrants are walking in the waves, trying to reach the boat. Clothes discarded by migrants are slowly recovered by the sand on a beach used as a starting point for crossing the channel.

Waken up by roaring engines and blue flashlights. A fishing boat had signalled a sea incident to the Sea Rescue Team. They deployed 100 meters from our home. They didn’t find a body, but a migrant drowned that night, 50 km up north.

Migrant's clothes washed up on Sangatte Beach

Black clothes discarded by migrants are washed on Sangatte beach. A ferry is crossing the chanel on the horizon. Migrants drop anything they don't need for the crossing, such as blankets or baby nappies, or anything that might prevent them from swimming if they fall overboard: shoes and, despite the cold, warm clothes.
