When I retired we bought a house in a small seaside town with long beaches on the French coast. We're regularly there since.

The city beaches are an ideal starting point for migrants

Last year, 13 people died here

1. This is something I've been saying for 25 years, but it's hard to get many people to listen. What counts is not the new energy sources you add, but the old ones you retire. Unfortunately it's politically easier to build renewables than to shutter fossil fuels.🧵

The sea front of Ambleteuse, Saturday night, before the rain. In the distance, the village of Audresselles, on the left, the sea at low tide and on the right, the street. A car passes by, a couple sitting on a bench draws a dark line in the light of the headlights.

Waken up by roaring engines and blue flashlights. A fishing boat had signalled a sea incident to the Sea Rescue Team. They deployed 100 meters from our home. They didn’t find a body, but a migrant drowned that night, 50 km up north.
