One of the most important graphs of the energy transition. The mindblowing progress in battery storage. Storing power in lithium-ion batteries is now cheaper than in hydropower dams.💡

This changes everything.

Neural networks consist of synapses and neurons 🧠. Perovskites make great artificial synapses, and now also neurons! Just off the press is Jeroen's article on stochastic spiking neurons, which use only 20–60 pJ per spike and can be easily integrated into networks.💡

Enjoying the Next Generation Solar Energy conference in Nürnberg organised by the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energies (HI ERN). Lots of insight into (automated) solar PV research, and a beautiful Christmas market!

Soon, we will reach parity between the production frequency of solar panels and AC current frequency in most electric grids: 50 Hz.

A new type of grid parity.

(we are now producing almost 50 solar panels per second globally, ~ 600 GW/year)

The new AMOLF solar cell efficiency charts are out! An incredible six new records: c-Si 27.4%, CdTe 23.1%, CZTS 13.2%, and SbSSe 10.7%perovskite-silicon 34.6%, perovskite-organic 25.1%.
Solar cell research remains a remarkably dynamic field!☀️ ⚡

Energy demand for AI grows exponentially. Brain-inspired computation could be much more efficient. 🧠
We show µm-sized perovskite artificial synapses that only use 640 femtojoules to switch. They could be integrated into a highly energy-efficient hardware neural network.

Great discussion about how following science can help accelerate the energy transition with Auke Hoekstra, Charles Harworth, @thomasnowak.bsky.social at Fully Charged in Amsterdam. Very optimistic view of the future, as long as we find a way to fight misinformation and just get on with it!
