M’s currently lead the league in BB’s, so i imagine they’ll look to work on the chase rate and improve his plate discipline, with the hope being that Edgar Martínez and Kevin Seitzer can have a similar effect on him that they’ve had on the rest of the lineup so far this year.

his chase % is way up since his peak in 2023 - 36.8% vs 28.2% - and his barrel % and average exit velo are down as well. swing speed is down but only slightly, from 71.3 in ‘23 and ‘24 to 70.9 so far in 2025.

Looking to 2025, I’m interested to see if new hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, who pushed a more swing-happy #braves offensive philosophy after joining their coaching staff in 2015, will aim to do the same in Seattle, and whether that can produce the same kinds of results.

Where this fell apart is in what the offense produced in addition to the free bases. While those four other teams also managed above-average OPS, the #mariners finished in the bottom 1/3rd.

Other teams with more aggressive strategies, like the #astros, successfully sacrificed walks for slugging.

In one sense, the #mariners were in good company here - the #yankees, #dodgers, #brewers, and #diamondbacks all finished bottom 10 in the league in swing rate, and collectively led the league in walks. We like getting on base for free! However -
