I got to be in my happy place this weekend. Even though it was snowing. Montpelier is always centering for me.

In Winston Salem. This is a 12 acre Black cemetery from the 20th century, with almost 10k people buried in it. The cemetery is 5 minutes from the center of @wakeforest.bsky.social campus.

Still processing this one, that I finished last night. I might have to reread the last chapter. Would recommend!

@americanair.bsky.social. Figured this was pretty cut and dry. You all clearly bashed my literally brand new Solgaard
bag, making an enormous dent on the reinforced metal corner. Like, this takes some work to make this happen. however, you've decided that it's not damaged enough.

Just finished Josh Ritter’s The Great Glorious Goddamn of It All. Really enjoyed it. The 2nd book I’ve read about an old man reflecting back on his lonely, strange, conflicted life. The other was The Horse by Willy Vlauin. Would recommend them both. 🪓 🌲

Probably the last book I’ll finish this year…my third of Amor Towles this year. The novella, Eve in Hollywood, was fun. I’d read more stories about Eve if he wrote them!

We had a great time introducing and teaching our community partners about the research database for the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Its in its early stages, but we’re beginning the process of inputting almost 10,000 individuals and their death certificates into this database.

Amazing to hear Jesmyn Ward discuss her work, and its themes of love, suffering, grief, and her amazing ability to build empathy amongst her readers. A wonderful reminder about the power of literature and art to our lives and work. Thanks to @wakeforest.bsky.social for having her!!

This carnelian ring that we found in the extant kitchen at Montpelier cane to mind immediately. This ring likely traversed the Atlantic on the finger of a native African, and passed down through a generation or two. Such an object would have connected its displaced owner to its native community.

Ok, Winston Salem. This is a bit overstated:

If I die today and my headstone reads “a blend of scholarly charm and dad jokes with a side of archaeological enthusiasm” I will not be disappointed. This was fun, blueskyroast.com!

My Michigan upbringing will never be able to look at this kind of snow and be like, “we should probably shut it all down”. But here in the South, this grinds everything to a halt.

This bottle seal was found next to the hearth base of a building in the south yard. The structure was believed to have been built in the 2nd half of the 18th c as a spinning house w a dwelling above it, and later a dwelling for enslaved servants until it was destroyed ca. 1840.

🍷 bottle seals are always an exciting find, particularly if they have writing on them. All over the Montpelier property we’ve uncovered seals with the Madison’s names on them. “Iames” seals happen in 18th c contexts for James Madison Sr., while “James” are 19th c. for his son, President Madison. 🏺

My only Robin Hood find so far on this Disney trip. Very little respect handed to the best movie in the franchise at the parks. #oodelally
