An example from Japanese: the verb 急ぐ (isogu, to be in a hurry) to me is clearly related to 忙しい (isogashii, busy). But native speakers dismiss it because the kanji is different.
Weird language thing:
Possibly it's just that I write for a living, and I just... really like words and etymology, but I'm always surprised when people say "native speakers don't perceive the connection you see." E.g. in French "péter" means to fart. BUT
