I think most people (myself included) don’t have an intuition for orders of magnitude (e.g., the difference between millionaire and billionaire).

One way to appreciate this is time, since we all experience it. Here's the difference between a thousand, a million, and a billion seconds.

People in publishing who tell you or cause you to feel they can harm your career if you displease them almost never have that power. Especially in science fiction and fantasy. Especially in the short story field.

A reminder: the first Western novel featured a cowboy advocate for women's suffrage who is killed by powerful cattlemen threatened by his populist politics. To avenge him, his widow dresses up as a cowboy, goes to work at the ranch operated by his murderers, and eventually kills them in a shootout.
