Across the country and the world, far-right, racist and fascist forces are on the rise. Standing up to them in your local area can be very hard if you feel isolated. Nothing is more important than actions like this that give people confidence and show that the majority is anti-racist.

It was great to see so many people from all different backgrounds turn out to join the march. This is especially important because Newhaven, Seaford and Peacehaven have been hit hard with far-right flag activity over the last few months, including violent attacks on people who have removed flags.

Respectfully, this kind of behaviour seems to be exactly the logical progression of "patriotism". Patriotism isn't a neutral value to be reclaimed or defended: devotion to the myth of the "country" is the thin end of the wedge leading to nationalism, xenophobia and racism.

For people of colour, these flags evoke the dark days of the National Front. We’ve seen this before: racist abuse, street violence, fear. We refuse to go back. Brighton is not having it, this ends now.

People who have taken down flags put up by MB Roofing have been followed, threatened, attacked. Council workers have been abused. They are sponsors of Brighton and Hove Albion @officialbha.bsky.social . So far, they’ve faced no consequences.

Violent racists have been emboldened by the media and government of this country. Last night was arson, but it could easily have been murder. Now is the time to come together as a community, protect each other, and reject the lies and violence of the far right.
