Zero and negative prices ARE part of any future. The real question is: what happens in all the other hours?
September 28, 2025 at 11:43 AM
📉 Negative prices are both a sign of success and a wake-up call. They show that we are producing plenty of electricity - but also that we must accelerate large flexible demands - and the largest potential i in district heating across Europe.

In that light, it’s even harder to see how nuclear could be profitable in this environment, with much higher capital costs.

The record is also a signal: consumers with flexible demand can win — from EVs and smart charging to industries and large-scale heat pumps.

👉 This is not just a market curiosity. It is a real struggle for new wind power projects. Revenues become harder to predict, financing costs rise, and investors hesitate. PPAs are becoming essential to make projects thrive. 👇

✅ On one hand, it shows the success of renewables: wind and solar are pushing prices down, sometimes below zero. Great for competitiveness + electrification.

❓ On the other: who will invest in new generation capacity — whether backup plants (via capacity mechanisms) or new wind farms.

... the EU must not only set ambitious targets for 2035 and 2040, but also prove delivery or risk losing its image as the world’s climate frontrunner.

⚡ The EU’s 2035 NDC will be judged against its 2040 pathway and China’s pledge.

It's a free ride - as we are seeing this in projections already. This reinforces China’s role as both the world’s biggest coal consumer and the green tech leader.
- For Europe, this means pressure though:

But it should be connected one to one with subsidies that bring down costs and help reach the pledges with better security of supply and higher strategic economy.

At the same time, geopolitics is shifting:
- China has just announced its first ever emission reduction pledge to the UN.

- How can the EU bridge deep internal divides in the European council / European Commission and the European Parliament between more ambitious Northern/Western states and more cautious Eastern ones? It's a real struggle for the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU 2025.

- Should the 2035 pledge align with the Commission’s recommendation of a 90% cut by 2040? Then a linear assumption would give a reduction target of 72,5% in 2035. 82% in 2040 would give 68,5%. But high and both needs a lot of short term action to be implemented.

The result: a park that can supply power for 28,000 households that still enjoys local support. A strong reminder that process and participation are key for successful energy infrastructure.

Her er der ikke store protester over ny solcellepark
I dag åbnede Sjællands næststørste solcellepark, og selvom solcelleparker ofte møder hård modstand fra både naboer og naturfredningsfolk, så er denne historie lidt anderledes.

The bad cases often rightly get a needed attention. But the good cases almost never hit the media.
Early involvement is key:
👉 Transparent communication with neighbours
👉 Space for nature and recreation alongside the solar panels
👉 Respect for distance to nearby homes

For European mobility and competitiveness, better and faster integration of energy-efficient transport is key. We also have to accept this can take time. With long-term planning, as seen in Japan, EU can further connect large city regions across the continent. 🌍

Luckily it is not permanent and not for business. So somewhat a market based connection to the physical world is still present.

A built out of onshore wind in combination with a multi - market Germany would keep a gold incentive structure. It is of course legitimate to consider low income groups. But they do not use 5.000 MWh/month....(Yes I wrote pr month).

🔥 In this first phase, more than 1 million kWh of surplus heat has been delivered to the local grid. A strong example of sector integration where Power-to-X not only decarbonises fuels but also contributes to efficient heating.
