Over half of all voyages through the Taiwan Strait are between China’s own ports, making the strait vital for the flow of goods within China. Any disruptions in the strait would severely impact China’s domestic trade.

This should go without saying, but none of this is about efficiency; it’s about breaking the wills of anyone earnest enough to view public service as a worthy calling and, by extension, to undercut the draw of service for a generation.
