Thanks to @nnamdikid.bsky.social & Tom Sherwood for the convo on our upcoming roundtable. Residents are scared & angry about D.C. government coordination with federal law enforcement. I invite you to submit your concerns to my Council colleagues and me: brianneknadeau.com/human-rights...

I am saddened and angry over last night’s shooting of 5 people, including a minor, next to @HowardU, just after Yardfest. Homecoming should be a time of joy and celebration. Thankfully none of the injuries were life-threatening. I wish each of them a speedy recovery.

Today on @wamu.org's Politics Hour we covered one of my favorite topics: DC's bottle bill! I grew up with a 10-cent deposit in Michigan & I am proud to introduce legislation to bring a similar program to the District to get litter off our streets & out of our rivers. brianneknadeau.com/bottle-bill/

Together with my Council colleagues, I hosted the incredible student-attorneys from the UDC Law Legislation Clinic for a mock hearing on enhancing public safety in the District. I enjoyed hearing the proposals & policy solutions from these future leaders.

Today we're talking all things consumer protection at the Committee on Public Works & Operations. I'm chairing a hearing on three bills that seek to protect District residents as concert goers, renters, and homeowners. Here's the quick rundown as we continue to hear from 100+ public witnesses.

Truancy and chronic absenteeism is a crisis we need to tackle if our students are going to reach their full potential. At yesterday's Council hearing, I was eager to hear from educators about what's working and what isn't. Now it's up to us to work together. We can't keep failing our kids.

Today we got to celebrate the opening of the Park Morton apartments and that 15 former residents—so far—have moved back into their neighborhood. Many people worked thru a lot of challenges to get us here. Part of the Ward 1 housing production success story!

This week I biked to new places, rode rail and even a boat. And today I capped it off with the Bancroft bike bus! Thank you again to @ggwash.org for sponsoring and highlighting all the fantastic public transit options across our city!

The Anacostia is a beautiful natural resource here in DC, but the litter that starts in our streets & neighborhoods & ends up in the river is a huge problem.
My bottle bill, which receives its 1st hearing tomorrow, will dramatically increase recycling rates. brianneknadeau.com/bottle-bill/

During DC Week Without Driving sponsored by the Transportation Equity Network @ggwash.org, I've been commuting via bike as usual. But today, I biked to Anacostia for the first time! The ride over the bridge was beautiful!

Plastic bottles make up 60% by weight of all the trash floating on the Anacostia and lining its banks.
We're heading out on the water to see what's at stake, as well as some great restoration efforts, ahead of tomorrow's first hearing on the bottle bill.

Now more than ever, the work of protecting human rights is the District is absolutely critical. This morning I chaired a roundtable to consider nominees for the Commission on Human Rights. The Commission ensures that every DC resident can live and work free from discrimination.

Proud to join the African American Civil War Memorial Museum this morning to unveil a new statue of President Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation. Thank you to Executive Director Dr. Frank Smith and everyone that worked to bring this poignant symbol of freedom to Ward 1.
