In the 1980’s the artist Peter Seddon created a series of large scale pastel drawings based on the Highland Clearances that explored themes such as history, memory and cultural difference. This is for a series of drawings exploring the themes that I first came across in Peter’s work

‘And I think of the things that matter and I think of the things that don’t’ are my favourite lines from ‘Drug Habit’ by Yo La Tengo which in turn is one of my favourite songs. I sometimes think that every single drawing that I do should be called that.

I have developed a perhaps unhealthy obsession with what I think are called ‘Honko Aluminium House Cars’. Their preferred habitat seems to be sitting outside houses in rural Japan surrounded by plant pots. Might put that I’m willing to paint for one on my profile.

A last wee push with this. The text will read ‘Those we carry with us like sparks running through a stubbled field’

So another version of Bernadette Devlin (with Malcom X). My previous versions of her were rapidly turning her into Ozzy Osbourne, which is fine I suppose if you are the godfather of Heavy Metal but less so if you are a social activist

A drawing for a piece to be submitted for an exhibition exploring the right to protest. Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi who was shot and killed by Israeli military forces during a protest in Israeli-occupied Palestine

Cesar Chavez with a drawing of Victor Jara behind him. I seem to have annoyed a small corner of Miami with my drawings of people who were either tortured to death by U.S/ U.K supported right wing Juntas or spent their whole lives fighting for the disadvantaged. It’s a funny old world.

A drawing of Victor Jara for a piece to be submitted for an exhibition exploring the right to protest. Victor was a leading voice in the Chilean New Song movement. He was one of the many thousands tortured and murdered during the 1973 coup which was supported by the U.S. and U.K. governments

A study of Alaa Salah for a piece to be submitted for an exhibition exploring the right to protest. Alaa Salah has played a crucial role in revolution and post revolution Sudan and continues to be heavily involved in the transition towards peace and justice.

Aw man, thanks for posting. I saw that exhibition in the old Third Eye Centre just before I went to North Uist for the first time, so important, the book has hardly left my since, a bit battered now but sure aren’t we all. Did you see it in Stornaway?
