This is also why young adults seek out edgy things. They're really looking for adulthood, for maturity, for the things that really matter (even if they don't know precisely what those things look like) and eschewing the carefully sanitized world their parents and schools have put them in.

I think one of the defining attributes of YA fiction is that its readers are transitioning into adulthood, and they're desperate for authentic media that's willing to treat them like an adult. At that age, I would have shied away from anything I felt was holding back "because I'm still a kid".
