Indigenous veterans, such as the Mi’kmaw from across Mi'kma'ki who enlisted in large numbers during World War I and World War II, made unique contributions that shaped our military legacy.

Today, we pause to honour their courage, dedication, and sacrifices – and acknowledge the systemic inequalities they faced. Their stories are essential to understanding our shared history, although often overlooked in the pages of history.

Today, we pause to honour their courage, dedication, and sacrifices – and acknowledge the systemic inequalities they faced. Their stories are essential to understanding our shared history, although often overlooked in the pages of history.

We have a collective responsibility to address this shameful and ongoing legacy and build a better and brighter Canada for all, one where no child is left behind.

On September 30, and every day, we honour all the children who died or disappeared at residential schools and associated sites, and those who continue to grapple with the resulting intergenerational trauma.

Thank you to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation for inviting us to co-host the ceremony. & Thank you to the Usher of the Black Rod who joined us and to Knowledge Keeper Fred McGregor for starting the ceremony with a heartfelt prayer and smudging ceremony.
