over the past few years I have been compiling the uses of "history of the present" for an article i don't and probably wil not have time to write. This one, from Timothy Garton Ash, made me laugh for a number of reasons - egotistical, inaccurate, self-deprecating but also self-centering

this review is evidence that many scholars should read more structuralism to understand a structure like "racial capitalism" - like most things, there are critiques to be made of it as a concept, but most of the ones historians make are some iteration of "who has agency?" 🙄

This New Yorker article celebrating AI/humanities seems to miss that what the author and his student find so appealing is that AI is understood here as the triumph of a very specific and attenuated therapeutic.
(It's also a deeply melancholy essay even if the author is unaware)
