I don't think it's quite right to see Cornell, UVa etc etc in terms of capitulation to the Trump regime. Rather, they are consolidating the university they have been creating for decades, one in which faculty and students are just unfortunate necessary components to the machine

Great essay from Pete Coviello on inane Mamdani-Bowdoin-Africana Studies story in the Times and the disingenuous discourses that engulf us.

"An “alienated view of the world”! Not by, like, trying to pay rent or having an insurance claim denied—no, no, it was probably the Foucault you read in 2003."
Maybe Don’t Talk to the New York Times About Zohran Mamdani
It’s remarkable, the people you’ll hear from. Teach for even a little while at an expensive institution—the term they tend to prefer is “elite”—and odds are that eventually someone who was a studen…

At a time when a journal committed to history as a form of critique is more necessary than ever, History of the Present encourages critical examination of both history’s influence on politics and the politics of history as a discipline. Issue 15:2 is now available: buff.ly/zGvYNDW

Very fun/exciting to be in a bar in Brooklyn when Mamdani won and everyone cheered

You should pre-order since this will surely be terrific like all the other issues. And you can read me going on about “positive incest,” MILF Manor, hot toddler, and incest porn among other family romances

Trying to decide if I should start my book with a reading of the great No Trend song “Family Style” or a reading of the not so great 1984 incest porn miniseries “Taboo American Style”

This is just the latest in a series of awful actions by the BOG - there is not even a pretense to academic freedom in the state anymore and worrying that this is making professors a target of political and ideological actions is nice but at least 5 years late
Florida's Board of Governors wants institutions to have course syllabi available 45 days before courses start. That raises serious issues about faculty calendars and adjuncts, and Georgia has moved to requiring syllabi at the time of student registration (!!!).

As an administrator, this is messy.
Florida wants to post more college syllabi online. Professors fear what's next.
University leaders in the Sunshine State want schools to post what textbooks, instructional materials and readings are required for most courses.

Florida’s Social Studies standards are getting another update next month.

No, those terrible African American History standards will stay, but there’s a huge update to our Anti-Communism education.

This is just one page.

Cuomo is such a piece of shit
Andrew Cuomo’s campaign just posted — and quickly deleted — this AI-generated ad depicting “criminals for Zohran Mamdani.”

Features a Black man in a keffiyeh shoplifting, an abuser, a trespasser, a trafficker, a drug dealer, and a drunk driver all declaring support for Mamdani.

It’s telling that almost all mainstream politicians find nothing but fault with universities and find police forces faultless.

LMS like Canvas suck, but has anyone tracked how much money is spent by universities on purchasing, IT support, etc for them? As state funds have basically plateuaed/declined there has been this massive, mostly distracting invesment in these absurd things when we could just use blackboards and paper

Glad these universities are rejecting the compact. However the bar is so low and these presidents and trustees have had to deliberate about the response. And now that it’s open to everyone you can probably expect major unis, like Florida and Texas systems, to sign on soon…
