I wish that professor was wrong.

But here I am 15 years later with health insurance and stable housing thanks to my husband's more traditional employment. While I love being a freelance illustrator, I don't know if I could survive the drought-or-flood nature of the job without that stroke of luck.

It was made worse by the fact that this was pre-2015, and therefore before national gay marriage in the US. As a young queer kid sitting in that class, the fact that even finding a partner with access to those things wouldn't necessarily guarantee them for myself felt maddening.
