My brain strictly uses software to calculate distance as I have amblyopia, but with humans, I imagine we needed stereopsis or "lidar" to build the mental model first

It's called ---YOU--tube. I followed Kevin Rose from Digg.com in those days, it was most certainly a web upvoting, thumbs-upping, retweeting community scale initiative.
