The last bridge on the photo tour is the one I saved for last- literally! It's one of the most popular structures in Frankfurt and one that can be seen in nine out of ten postcards, let alone in many books on bridges and Frankfurt itself. The bridge is so popular that one can even find lovelocks on there, although I would not recommend doing that for reasons of compromising the structure's integrity and safety.

The Skinny Bridge is one of the most popular of the city's bridges. It is so popular that one will find it on much of the merchandise and some websites- even the postcards, as I have two dozen of the structure, but from different angles and also time period.

In the previous post, I showed you the postcard of the Untermainbrücke in its original form from 1872-4. To view its history up to World War II, you can click on the window below: This post is the second part in the story behind the Untermainbrücke. Due to increasing traffic combined with structural concerns because of its reconstruction, the city council approved a plan to reconstruct the entire structure in 1988.

Slide the photos above to see the difference. 🙂 The bridge we are presenting is the oldest known structure in the city, the Alte Brücke.

High Viaduct in Sichuan, China Collapses
Source: Highest Bridges.com Motorway Bridge Collapses due to Landslide, months after its opening. No Casualties SICHUAN, CHINA- Mother nature and potential design flaws contributed to a collapse of one of the highest motorway viaducts in southwestern China early Tuesday morning. The Hongqui Viaduct was a 760-meter long box girder viaduct that spanned a reservoir carrying the Sichuan-Tibet Highway near Mearkang. The viaduct was completed earlier this year by the Sichuan Road and Bridge Group, a consortium of bridge builders and construction firms responsible for the bridge and the road that was supposed to provide quicker and safer passage to the Tibetian Plateau.

Ponte de Maria Pia. Photo taken by Joseolgon, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons As a follow-up to yesterday's guest post on the Dom Luis I Bridge, we have the rest of the bridges one has to see while visiting the second largest city in Portugal. Porto has over 252,000 inhabitants, but its metro area has 1.8 million. It's located in the northern part of the country, where the Duoro RIver empties into the Atlantic Ocean, yet the river is known for its steep cliffs, which cuts the historic city into two, with buildings being located both at the bottom and at the top of the cliffs.
