In Zelda's case, it doesn't even feel less authentic since the original games (which are all that existed at the time) didn't have much for the show to deviate from (as the story was minimal) - this was long before Ocarina of Time & the rest of the series that is recognized by modern audiences.

I'd argue it holds up even better than the Super Mario cartoon. The show just became available to watch on Tubi.

These particular sketches were always so interesting to me because its clearly evocative of the other Zelda works he's known for, but is so fundamentally different at the same time. I always wondered if these were, like, the early concepts or if they were just meant to be a different interpretation.

This is only applicable if Link's red tunic was ever depicted in official illustrations outside the game (due to the inherent limitations of in-game colour palettes not always representing the physical artwork), otherwise we can't scientifically assert this law.
