But what so many Americans either forget or just don't know is that most people not only LIKE helping, but get significant benefits themselves - lower blood pressure, stronger immune system, a flood of lovely brain chemicals (serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin, oh my!), and lots more.

For example, post-surgery. Lots of people have offered generalized help - I've taken several of them up on it: picking up my meds from the pharmacy, returning a library book, taking care of Banjo, and picking up stuff I've dropped on the floor (I can't bend over and apparently I drop things a LOT).

systems thinking, while self-taught folks brought out of the box solutions because often learned every in and out of a code, project, documentation convention, language, etc., so they knew what was possible in ways textbooks didn't venture into.

I had a really fascinating discussion with a CIO about recruitment once - he had a philosophy that a successful IT team/department purposefully had people with degrees and people without. The theory being even though degrees become obsolete relatively quickly, they tend to teach big picture/
