In my humble opinion, it is absolutely necessary for both teachers and students to acquire these skills if we wish to optimize our personal, professional, and global potential as thriving individuals and communities.
Talking the Read, Episode 7
Learn and Teach in the Ocean of Technology I've been thinking a lot about how educators need to respond to some of our biggest issues in education: the rapid decline in student engagement, the steep decline in curricular relevancy, and the steady increase in teacher burnout. I don't have all the answers to these problems, but I do find myself circling around one particular response that I feel very passionate about: developing a new set of technology skills we should teach (and expect from) our current and future educators.

Talking the Read, Episode 5
Floating Fish You know those learning platforms that have a library of curated articles for you to assign your students to read or listen to, maybe even annotate, and then answer some standardized questions? No doubt, they're convenient; but, honestly, what does anyone really learn from fishing in a stagnant pond? Allow me to elaborate on this metaphor. In the pond, the fish don’t swim — they float.

"How we respond to AI and the reckoning it's having on education could either rid us of this joke, or make it worse. All of this is at the core of today's episode." #EduSky #EdTech #AiEDU #AIinEducation
Talking the Read, Episode 4
When the Joke Falls Flat While working on this week's episode of Talking the Read, I asked some of my family members to listen to the opening. I was trying something different with the music, and I wanted some feedback. I wanted to, simultaneously, poke fun at and validate the hype surrounding ChatGPT. Like what we're seeing with most AI tools, ChatGPT can do so much and, yet, at the same time, it falls so short in what we need.

Tried a cold opening for this episode, inspired by @kevinroose.com and @caseynewton.bsky.social with their show Hard Fork. If you’re thinking my chatbot host Chris sounds just like Kevin, I’m thinking the same thing! #podcast #podcastlife #EdTech

This was too useful to ignore, but not quite presentable for teachers. So, I made it such. Doing so was a reminder at how important it is to think with a cross-AI platform mindset. More details in the disclaimer.

Claude's Ode to the Socratic Seminar Many of us can probably recall our first ah-ha moment with AI--when we realized we could no longer view this as some ruinous technology in our field of education. Instead, we realized, despite our concerns (which are real concerns), there are some powerful learning opportunities to be had with artificial intelligence. For me, that moment came when trying out Quizlet's Q-Chat.

I did some experimenting with @elevenlabs.io to see how it might be useful in the classroom. I ended up with a few ideas and a podcast.

Using AI to Differentiate Reading (and Writing) Experiences As a high school English teacher, I'm always open to new and fresh ways to engage my students with reading material. While I'm well aware of the concerns surrounding how students use AI to essentially bypass all opportunities to hone their ELA skills, I do think there are ways to counter this by thinking differently about how we use AI in our curriculum. But it takes some experimenting on the teacher's part to figure out what this could and should look like.

Let’s keep this in mind as we also rethink (or should be rethinking) what it means to be media literate and how we teach this in our classrooms. It’s so much more than just fact checking. #edusky #medialiteracy

The Walkman Effect
The Mission of Braving Education I don't remember how old I was exactly when I got my first Walkman, but I remember my sudden amazement to the fact that I could slide a cassette tape into a device and play and replay (over and over again) that one hit song I first heard on the radio or saw on MTV. And I could use this technology wherever and whenever I wanted. It was fascinating.  But, eventually, most of us would grow tired of that one song, and the manual rewinding it demanded of us.
