Ace is settling into the household quite well. 😀

13 months old, he spent the vast majority of his life to date in the shelter. He’s very sweet, but a bit unclear on how to be a dog. He does love chewing on things though.

Bandit passed 3 weeks ago, and I still miss him dearly. But 1 week ago I went to the county animal shelter. This is Ace, formerly known as stray A62748.

I would have more respect for "I was lazy and didn't bother to get it covered. Nobody seemed to care."

Tex-Mex doesn’t fix everything but it does fix a lot of things.

Bandit was a pain in the ass his entire life. Sometimes I hated the little bastard I'd inherited. But ultimately I loved him very much.

I've now been a week with no dogs in the house. I haven't enjoyed it much. Tomorrow I'm going to the country animal shelter to find a dog in need of a home.

Things gradually got worse, but he was always able to shake anything off. He coughed to clear the fluids from his lungs. When he needed to puke, he puked. And then resumed chasing birds.

And of course he peed wherever he felt like, the little asshole.

In February 2024 his last sibling passed. He was diagnosed with heart failure at about the same time, and started taking medications.

I thought about getting another dog at that time, but Bandit clearly enjoyed being an only dog. So I decided to wait.

And he lasted an amazingly long time.

In 2020 he dug out of the back yard, crawled under the gate, and ran off down the street. He was promptly hit by a speeding car. It broke his jaw, caved in part of his skull, and deeply lacerated his front legs. True to his frustrating yet tough nature, he recovered fine after surgery.

He never quite accepted he wasn't allowed to pee in the house. He knew I didn't want him to, but he also mostly didn't care. If he needed to pee when I was away he was going to pee. Pee pads mitigated this but a chunk of molding in my kitchen is going to need to be replaced soon.

He was part of a litter of five puppies, three of which would ultimately wind up with me due to deaths. He outlived the last of his siblings by 20 months. A tough little bastard of a dog until the very end.

He was a difficult dog almost his whole life. Aggressive to other dogs and strangers.
October 13, 2025 at 2:17 AM
He was 13 and a half, not bad at all for a Boston terrier mix. He had been with me for most of that time, though for for the first few years he had been my parents' dog until they couldn't take care of him anymore. My father passed in late 2017, my mother in early 2019, but Bandit just kept going.
October 13, 2025 at 2:14 AM
I had to put Bandit to sleep last Monday. It was a hard choice, though ultimately all of the alternatives were worse. His senses were still relatively good, he was still lucid, and his appetite was still strong. Most of the time his mobility was still fine, and he was still interested in the world.

Random life hack time. Panasonic Let’s Note laptop are durable, easy to work on, and available for $100-200 on eBay because Japanese companies issued them by the millions.

They’re useless for modern games, but if you need a netbook or disposable travel they’re great.

This is straight up paranoid nonsense. The Trump administration constantly makes empty threats. The actual capacity of the DoJ continues to decline each month.

There are not that many Feds, the quality of their leadership has declined sharply, and morale is in freefall.

I paid $25 at the hardware store for my chunk of nylon and I'll raise or lower it as I see fit. Texas drowning victims? Sure. 9/11? Sure. Charlie Kirk? Obviously not.

Delightful thing to receive in the VA newsletter. These guys really are turning over ever rock looking for goons.

"Things don't feel as exciting as they did when I visited 17 years ago!" Dude is projecting his midlife crisis onto a whole damn country.

Shigeru Mizuki's "Onwards Towards Our Noble Deaths" by an actual Imperial Army vet is much better on this. He's very openly contemptuous of the officers that wasted so many lives for nothing.

Slightly guilty admission, but I really like this stupid capeshit soap opera. Does is actually do some Important Deconstruction of comics? No. But it does have that early Chris Claremont "ridiculous premise plus lots of drama" energy.

Twitter is definitely having a normal reaction to learning Japanese animation companies exist in the modern world and not in some weird unchanging "based" bubble.

You should have tried harder.

Stolen from the Other Site. Like yeah, regional stability yadda yadda... but c'mon. This is incredibly satisfying. Iran has been overdue for a beatdown for decades.
