He/Him

I think about a lot of things all of the time.

EN-OC-FR
And my point was not to say ”no this is actually entirely the left’s fault, we’re the failures,” but rather to say that we do, for valid reasons, contribute to this problem. Like I want to make it clear that this is first and foremost a right-wing propaganda problem.

It’s a fair reaction, men do suck, but it’s not one that promotes consciousness raising. So like, idk if one of the most prominent Black feminist writers talked about this back in ’04, I don't think I'm building fake arguments out of whole cloth.

But again, this has been a thing for decades. bell hook’s Will to Change talks about how valid grievances against men led a lot of feminists to just abandon men all together, instead of working with men to unpack imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.

I’m not even saying that she doesn’t have a right to be Punchy, like yeah shit is annoying. Rebecca is a creator I really respect and think she does good work, and obviously she’s had to put up with a lot. She has a right to be uncharitable. I’m really not trying to come after her on this.

Now idk if this creator is a Marxist, but she’s undoubtedly someone who exists in the more progressive, anti-cap content space. And a lot of people who self id as leftist have been sharing similar sentiment, and this has been going on for forever. bell hooks wrote about it back in 2004.

Take the following screencap: now the dude could definitely be trolling, but also could be engaging in good faith. Yet in either case Rebecca's reply is dismissive explicitly on the grounds of his race and gender, after saying that she’s not willing to organize with regretful Trump voters

And this was and is primarily used by people in progressive/leftist spaces. This rhetorical shutdown has been in full force on this site for the past few weeks in the debate on whether the left should try to capitalize on discontent among Trump supporters to organize for leftist causes.

Now i’d personally agree that Buzfeed Feminism isn’t particularly leftist or even anti-capitalist, but such content was at the heart of a lot of progressive awakenings for people, myself included. And in that environment, ”cishet white male” became a shorthand for saying ”your problems don't matter”

I would agree, but it actually often does come from ”the left” and not just reactionary media. Pop feminism of the 2010’s focused way too much on toxic masculinity while failing to acknowledge how capitalist patriarchy keeps working class men down as well.
February 26, 2025 at 9:50 PM
Oh that’s a deeply annoying experience for sure.

As for solutions, I personally think that we need to not just fact check, but to testify: to produce high-affect, dogmatic espistems that actually align with reality and respect the fullness of human experience. I think that'll be hard to do, but will need to be a skill we learn.
February 23, 2025 at 6:12 PM
We’ve all been observing this over and over again for a decade. But this observation hasn’t come to any change in methodology on our part; ”Fact Checking,” as vital as it is, is still the primary rhetorical device despite clearly not working (4)

Of course, the Bible has no one true meaning, and different traditions have interpreted it in different ways for centuries, but to this group differences in interpretation are heresies. This is not new, and has been used historically for political gain such as in the Wars of Religion. (3)
February 23, 2025 at 5:51 PM
The Bible is univocal and unanimously true, and if it’s not, if there are things in reality that counter the Good Word, then ”no there’s not shut up”. The Truth of the Bible is not actually an inherent part of its existence, but a manufacture enforced for self-soothing anxieties about the world. (2)

Like I guess the lessons are going to stick with le more than if I had just read them or heard someone else say it, but still like damn.

Oh and Kelsilem from Squamish Nation! A great speaker indeed. Indigenous voices are at the heart of language revitalization, and imo anybody invested in that project at all should be listening carefully to what they have to say and throwing as much support at them with as much weight as possible.
