This morning "CAD before breakfast" was a request to draft up a set of split rings that can be used to bolt a small Orion refractor to a little equatorial mount, requested by John (a member of the Chabot Telescope Maker's workshop). This should be more secure […]

My "findr" project continues to drag along. I've learned a bunch about using onshape to design more complex housings. The physical version lacks the power button that I still need to source, but overall it's ready to sit on a tripod and do some more testing […]

Hey there #3dprinting savants. I've got somewhere close to 100 hours into using my Anycubic Kobra S1 Combo, and in most respects I am pretty happy with it. But a couple of times in the last two days, it's had an issue with the initial Z probe, and the last time it happened, it appeared to drag […]

Making some headway on my #raspberrypi based star finder scope using #onshape to design the housing. It should have most of the functionality that I need, but I think the front end will still get some love, as will the grating that fits over the exhaust fan.

Okay, improvement to my #3dprinting setup accomplished: printed a holder for some 24V LED strip out of some white ABS I had lying around, and wired it into the power supply of my Kobra S1 Combo. Now the interior will be lit whenever power is on (entirely reasonable) and shadowing from the camera […]

Okay, off to the garage to test the new 24V LED strip I got, and then fit it to the inside of my Kobra S1 Combo 3D printer so that the inside is better (and continuously) lit.

I just completed all 12 days of Advent of Code 2025! #adventofcode https://adventofcode.com/

I'm going to redo my part 12 entry, because it took about 1h38m to run, which seems excessive, given that most of the possible entries seem pretty easy to solve.

Sigh. Looks like one of my cats is going to need to have a couple of teeth pulled. Poor baby.

Stage 8 of #adventofcode would have been a lot more straightforward for me had I not blanked on the Union Find algorithm. Once I consulted some references, and fixed a bug in my understanding of the spec, it wasn't that hard. At least now I'm up to date.

I just completed "Reactor" - Day 11 - Advent of Code 2025 #adventofcode https://adventofcode.com/2025/day/11 I suppose the lesson I should learn is that searching in graphs is a fools errand. Counting large numbers of paths one by one is just not going to get you there. My python answer […]

I just completed "Factory" - Day 10 - Advent of Code 2025 #adventofcode https://adventofcode.com/2025/day/10

I solved the first half using search. The second half was actually simpler, and doesn't require search. I used a couple of libraries that I wasn't familiar with, but it popped out the […]

Minor #3dprinting discovery with my #anycubic korba s1. Had a problem where the X axis homing was failed. Apparently the housing for the printhead had become very slightly dislodged, which was enough for it to not depress the limit switch at the the home position. Literally reseated it, with […]

I finally got around to reading this and boy is it good:
“If we use 200kW as a baseline and assume all of that power will be fed to GPUs, we'd need a system 12.5 times bigger, i.e., roughly 531 square metres, or about 2.6 times the size of the relevant solar array. This is now going to be a very […]

I just completed "Laboratories" - Day 7 - Advent of Code 2025 #adventofcode To be honest, I am not quite sure I understand how the code I wrote actually works: it took a small amount of finessing, and the final change that made it pass the test case wasn't entirely obvious to me. Perhaps I'm […]

I've completed "Trash Compactor" in just 1h08s. It's the kind of code that is really annoying in part 2, rewriting data in a really annoying format into a form you can compute with. Still, done! Day 6 - Advent of Code 2025 #adventofcode https://adventofcode.com/2025/day/6

Used #3dprinting to make a keyfob that contains an NFC RFID tag that stores my vcard. Now, if I want someone to have my phone/email, they can just tap this fob and get it added to their contact list.

It's good—very good, and very important—that district courts keep issuing these 100-page rulings upholding the law. It must be incredibly dispiriting to see them overturned in a two-page, lawless, unsigned order, but please, keep them coming. They expose SCOTUS' corruption like nothing else.
