I think there's a difference between the book and the movie here. In the movie, HAL is defending himself and (spoiler alert!) kills the astronauts because he concludes he is more important to the mission than them. In the novels it's the cognitive dissonance of keeping a secret and having to lie.

Same here! I've owned and now I'm renting and, while it's nice to have home equity as a sort of savings account, renting is cheaper and has far fewer headaches.
