From Maureen Dowd: Trump’s talent is finding wormholes in the system he can exploit for his own satisfaction or financial gain – things that are not specifically outlawed because it never occurred to the founders or anyone else that a low-life could rise so high.

I suppose I'm not the only person to see this as a tragic metaphor.

It's ironically fitting that access to the Statue of Liberty will be closed by this administration. The statue represents not only the ideal of liberty that is an essential part of our Constitution and it welcomed immigrants from Europe who helped to build our nation.

I don't watch that kind of program, but I did read that the young actor in "Adolescence" got an Emmy. I watched the film a while ago. I think it's really worth seeing, and Owen Cooper is amazing in his role. I did find the whole story disturbing, but I believe that was the intention.

The signature certainly looks authentic to me. I was a bit doubtful about "enigma" as being part of his limited vocabulary. But maybe he didn't know what it means -- the statement doesn't make much sense to me.

Many countries are condemning him. Yesterday's Irish Times was one diatribe after another. The Guardian (UK) has also been reporting statements from the UK government. I think international action is not far away, including moving the UN out of the US .

Utterly deranged. He has managed to "normalize" behavior that makes his sociopathic disorder totally clear to rational people while seen as acceptable by his cult. Congress, are you there at all for the people who voted you in?

It isn't "normal" for a president to repeatedly get away with it -- not just the threat but the action. We have an astonishing number of people in Congress, the cabinet, and in the judicial system that have no interest in the laws or the people of this country. Baffling and tragic.

They won't stop because to do so would be a "loss" for the regime. This man (and countless others) should be given a proper trial. He's entitled to due process. What is wrong with our courts and our Congress that the Constitution's provisions have become optional? That's a rhetorical question.

Right -- let's keep moving all those brown people out of our country. They weren't contributing anything anyway, were they? Just taking jobs that should go to white people. Push them out.

Apparently black is okay for a wall -- just not okay if it's connected with your ethnicity.

Robert Reich has shared a thoughtful essay on patriotism, which has some close links to freedom. We need a lot more of both. open.substack.com/pub/robertre...

Unfortunately, too many voters aren't paying attention. They will, I suppose, when they realize how much has been taken from them. But, as an illustrious legislator said, "They'll get over it."
Sic transit gloria mundi.

I went to lots of protests in the 60s. I'm 78. I never expected to need to turn for many of the same issues and worse sixty years later. It's tragic and baffling, but we can't give up.

Do you mean he discovered those people have value to our economy? That they make a contribution to the greatness of America? What a surprise.

The email explained that investigations involving “human trafficking, money laundering, drug smuggling into these industries are OK.” But it said — crucially — that agents were not to make arrests of “noncriminal collaterals,” a reference to people who are undocumented

I'm beginning to think that Musk has promised Trump passage to Mars, so he doesn't care what he leaves behind. He can't go too soon for me.

He's been eager for an opportunity to declare martial law and send in troops to one of his perceived "enemy" cities at least since he started this term. It's unlikely that the protesters who are NOT remaining peaceful will back off, because they are in this for something other than justice.

So something needs to happen sooner. It surely needs to be legal and non-violent, despite the illegal and violent actions of the other side. Trump is panting for a chance to declare martial law. Don't give it to him. Protests, phone calls to Congress, editorials, conversations with neighbors . . .
