50 years ago tonight, the jerry garcia band at keystone berkeley, filling in for the late-scratched delta wires (who are apparently still gigging). listening notes & a slightly blown-out audience tape (or a few soundboard tunes on compilations): heads.social/@bourgwick/1... #garciafreaksunite

and, while in the lot, be sure to pick up (what i think was) the final issue of the original grateful dead parking lot zine MIKEL, put out by his friends after michael linnah himself died of cancer earlier in the year. gdsets.com/images/galle...

and will end this thread (for now) by staring into our future bedroom in brooklyn, where i'm currently chillin'. the garbage can is still in the exact same place out front.

the future CBGB & bowery ballroom.

after that location they moved briefly to 430 6th ave (2nd floor in the back, i believe), directly across from jefferson library, then jefferson courthouse. this building is long gone.

until just before this picture was taken, this was milt gabler's commodore record shop on 52nd street. love that you can see the dude holding the location sign (probably a paid gig!), like when you accidentally see people's fingers in scanned books.

the loew's commodore on second avenue, later the village theater & then the fillmore east. could maybe date this photo via the #marqueespotting. apparently ratner's used to be on the southern corner before moving to the building just north of the theater?

at least according to one extensive search, this riker's on w. 4th was a probable inspiration for edward hopper's nighthawks. www.nighthawknyc.com/2019/07/29/m...

the then-new venue, the village vanguard, visible mid-block with only a small awning.

the hotel cecil in harlem, where celebrity night at minton's was one of the birthplaces of bebop, around the time this photo was taken. (is this a rainy night or just a messed up development process?)

just learned about the delightful 1940s.nyc, which matches tax assessment photos with old maps for maximum street-view time travel. here's the almanac house, where pete seeger & woody guthrie threw basement gigs & partied with dashiell hammett & nicholas ray, among others.

50 years ago tonight, seastones in san rafael, the 3rd of 4 performances in '75. probably ned lagin's last time playing with jerry garcia & david crosby (though that may have come earlier). no known tape or scene reports.

at property is theft, tom & danny from garcia peoples, minus the peoples, plus loops/beats/ebows & such. loose forms, sometimes a mite rough, sometimes ecstatic, all miniature distillations of the GPs' gooey guitar core.

feeling right levitated by chuck smith's fugs film! at @docnycfest.bsky.social, with glorious archival footage & fresh interviews, including ed sanders, the elusive & charming ken weaver, crumb & kominsky together & more. streaming thru 11/30 then up in the air. www.docnyc.net/film/fugs-fi...

50 years ago now-ish, a jerry garcia band "reflections" session with some unusual songs, feat. his earliest elizabeth cotten tunes. probably larry knechtel on keys. often labeled 11/76, somehow MIA from the @livetapes.heads.social.ap.brid.gy deluge. heads.social/@bourgwick/1... #garciafreaksunite

welcoming the winter hours with the fallen angels, live on WLIR, march '73. almost as cozy as the gram/emmylou duos is all the contextual ephemera inside the sleeve.

or i could just, like, leave the new natural information society album on the record player, flipping it over & over & over & live inside the slow motion bliss until spring or so. eremiterecords.bandcamp.com/album/persev...

important! first tape (that i've seen) of gillian welch & dave rawlings doing "wharf rat," rawlings nominally singing lead (but with lotsa welch), recorded a few weeks ago in glasgow. drive.google.com/file/d/1ibZW...
