When I see someone say "Modern games are too political" it makes me wonder if they don't have ability to see the messages people weave into their writing. It also makes me think they have a message they are trying to write themselves, and hide with subtlety.

Sometimes political messages in games are more subtle, including in the games I mentioned above. It takes being able to see the meaning painted within a story. I am also an enjoyer of Star Trek and it also has varying amounts of subtlety in its messages.

FFVII and its Remake both also hammer in this message incredibly hard, as well as sprinkling in some anti-corporate and anti-fascist messaging. Especially more blatantly in the Remake.

I have been playing through the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters and was reminded how often the crystals in those early games were used as an analogy for taking care of the planet. Overusing and abusing natural resources or co-opting them for war leads to destruction.
