Also I meant east of Volga. Sorry. Siberia, Tunguska, nothing until the Pacific Ocean. Let China have that if it likes, it'll just weaken them.

Destroy the regime's institutions and then rebuild them under supervision. It's a long process, cleansing fascism. You can't just destroy it, you must replace it with something better. Poll older East Germans and you'll get a lot of nostalgia b/c they still aren't as well off as the west.

So then it gets a little bloody. You crush the government and make sure its supporters, people who benefitted from the autocracy, until its remnants are surrendered, dead, or fled. Same with the oligarchs. Trials are always nice for legitimacy.

I would say occupy Moscow and maybe St Petersburg. Rural Russians -where conscripts come from- might not be as ready to defend Putin. Like Stalin, he's built his power base in the urban areas -where Russian power has come from since St Petersburg was built.

Churchill said that the Morgenthau Plan, which was to reduce Germany to a pastoral society, was so harsh that it would make everyone else politically and economically weaker. What about west of the Volga? That's a whole lot of nothing in return for a massive headache.

Now, is that so bad? Sounds like it would make everyone else more secure; the Balkans were a scene of genocide and ethnic cleansing but they weren't (and still aren't) a threat to anyone besides themselves (although Franz Ferdinand could tell you that is sometimes complicated).

Balkanization was incredibly violent and destructive. And because some of the new borders lump different ethnicities together that Balkans are not really a model of political stability. Russians comprise a large ethinicity of Russia.

The goals on this thread have been a little bit of a moving target, and that's what needs to be established. Do you want to destroy and rebuild Russia and its governing ideology (fascism/putinism), or do you want it neutered?

Yeah the whole "Let's get involved in an occupation of Asia" is never a good project. What worked in postwar Germany might not fit this context.

Trials for criminals in a lawless and now toppled regime also helped. But, as you say (more or less) Russia ain't Germany.
