There’s more to life than books you know…
Memorial Device ANT

Ulysses.

That boy Tennyson could write a poem.

It really was. And what a tonic that game was. Pure joy there at the end.

Loved watching Steve Clarke with his players. Top-drawer happy Dad energy.

Also, who wouldn’t want to be Scott?

I’m a teacher. So not money.

My family are Irish.

My parents came to London from Sligo in 1968 during a strike at the Arigna mine in Sligo.

I went to Cornwall on holiday with a mate in 85 and just love the countryside.

My Dad’s in this march somewhere.

Absolutely the same!

In the same order.

I LOVE King of Comedy so much.

Just saying.

First thought - a caltrop, for throwing under horses to turn their ankle. It’s a bit too pretty for that though I suppose. Here’s one from the First World War.

Slow cooked garlicky pork shoulder with five spice, noodles and greens. Plenty of soy.

Likky is still with us, heavens be praised. Now we need to leave her alone.

OK - maybe the greatest “punch the air moment” in all of music for me. Saw Arthur Lee in 2005 in Birmingham with a fantastic young starry eyed backing band. When the mariachi trumpet comes in on Alone Again Or at 1 min 47s. Bliss.

Oh yes. Every single thing about this. I remember as a kid thinking - why doesn’t everything sound like this? We only had our parents records. After this and Buddy Holly, we laid our hands on the Jim Reeves - absolutely nothing doing there. Has he not heard Hound Dog?

LOVE that.

Here’s another one - Bye Bye Pride, the Everly Brothers harmonies on “So take your shoes outside, walk to that tide, stride over stride , because the door is open wide STRIDE over stride.” Heartstopping.!

And they warned us they were going to do it - Bye Bye Love.

Me too. Although I was given a right old list of jobs.

Now done.

Feet up.

If this was the 19th century, Labour would recall Gordon Brown to the Treasury. Gladstone et al didn’t fall off a cliff when they lost an election.

Bought this in a sale at the Nelson Mandela building in Manchester Uni. in 1987 along with a bootleg tape of Prince’s Black Album and have been reading it ever since.

Cain said his prose lost its bounce when it left the concrete.

Have slain the dishes. And mopped the floor. Storm Claudia doing her thing outside. But in here it’s all good.

Rachel Cooke was a fantastic writer and this is very sad news.

Hear her lively voice and sensibility in this unforgettable episode of @backlisted.bsky.social

If you had told 14 year old me that soon technology would be so advanced that I could watch Shelley and Minder all evening using a handheld computer that would have convinced me the future was benign.

Films we thought were a bit meh, bitd. But are now canon.

Sausage and butterbean casserole. Heavy on the paprika and garlic. The dark nights are drawing in. And my humour is as black as them.

This should help.

Made roast chicken and all the trimmings. And fell asleep. Now awake. More news as we have it.
