The lies usually get more creative and unlikely. What I really want is a conversation about why they felt like they needed to use AI. Time management issues? Anxiety over a big project? Either way it would lead to rewriting in their own voice for credit; I just wish we could start with some honesty.

Also reminds me of when a student has turned in an obviously AI-written research paper complete with fake citations (that I've checked with several librarians just to make sure I'm not missing something), and so many will never just cop to what they did so we can move on.
