Giving someone a pass on impeachment because it might not work just sends the message that we don't think these actions are impeachment-worthy.

The way they will play this is obvious: offer Trump the sleeves off your vest, portray it as a really difficult give, note that this is going to really hurt your own annual bonus, and then say that Trump is just such a good negotiator that you had to concede this. No need to make any actual give.

How can the other people in the room not have said something like, "wait, this is nuts. We'll look like a bunch of idiots. Let's tone down the nonsense a bit, and we will still get to do the bulk of our corruption"?

As if the problem is that we just aren't listening enough to people who do not engage in good faith and actively intend to do harm to others.
