Grateful to live on the Oregon coast despite feeling surrounded by red hats at times. Retired early from healthcare during pandemic. Veggie grower. Home cook. Book lover. General Home Gnome.
That represents a lot of hard work to reach a major milestone. I hope you are feeling very proud of that!

We will always be dependent on farmers for our rice and beans, etc. We try to buy those from sustainable farmers in our region. For me there is a sort of primal satisfaction from growing food, even potted herbs. People should grow what they love and support farms doing it right.

I’m with you on this. This will be my fourth season of being serious about growing veggies. My goal is to grow nutritious, tasty veg for my little family of 3 and have some surplus to share with others. My garden is fairly large at this point but there is no way we could grow all of our calories.

Anyone cheering for climate disaster is a monster. What’s happening is tragic.

This only makes sense if you assume they want to cull a significant percentage of the population.

This is part of the issue. Our current culture wants policy solutions that can be summed up in 15 seconds. The issues are complex and the solutions must be so as well. The cycle of designing, implementing and evaluating policies and systems is highly skilled work and we want to hire entertainers?

Personally I just bake and freeze. I’ve been slicing and freezing bread then I lightly toast. If I wanted a whole loaf for later I’d slightly underbake it by a few minutes then finish the whole loaf in the oven.

I’m thinking of starting a Yule tradition this year. 12 days! I’m into celebrating the seasons so it works for me. We always do a tree and presents. And I agree. My best memories are of acts of service. Given and received. I need the reminder that I love humanity this year.

I’m with you but it’s clear we’ve always been dealing with miserable control freaks. I’m an atheist. If I got upset every time I got a Merry Christmas I’d never get anything done in December.

Pastry feels like the ultimate challenge in gluten free baking. I spent more time than usual laminating and I think it helped. Take pictures if you do it!

The filling was the NYT recipe with butternut squash we grew so it really contributed to feeling like a harvest celebration meal. Would recommend 10/10.
