The two original flags created for the 1978 parade were believed lost for over 40 years until a remnant of one was rediscovered among the possessions of Baker.

Thirty volunteers hand-dyed and stitched the first two flags for the parade. The original flag design had eight stripes, with a specific meaning assigned to each of the colors:

Hot Pink=Sex
Red=Life
Orange=Healing
Yellow=Sunlight
Green=Nature Turquoise=Magic/Art
Indigo=Serenity
Violet=Spirit

To this day, there is a stigma associated with those living with #HIV and #AIDS while the actions of those with power, that did nothing or denied the truth, continue to be overlooked.

On a personal note - This was an extremely difficult one for me to do. Once the makeup was on and the camera set up… All of the memories, sadness, and anger came right to the surface. I didn't want to hide that, because there are many of us that are still rightfully pissed off and mourn.

In a more radical way, the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP) was formed by 6 gay activists in New York City in 1987, & to draw attention to the disease's disproportionate impact on gay & bisexual men, & the apparent role of "genocidal" homophobia in slowing progress on medical research,(cont)

In the 1980s, the pink triangle was increasingly used not just as a memorial but as a positive symbol of both self and community identity. It commonly represented both #gay and #lesbian identity.

In the 1970s, it was revived as a symbol of protest against homophobia, and has since been adopted by the larger #LGBTQ community as a popular symbol of LGBTQ pride and the LGBTQ rights movement.

In Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, it began as one of the Nazi concentration camp badges, distinguishing those imprisoned because they had been identified by authorities as gay men, a category that also included bisexual men and transgender women.

The bear subculture is not a furry subculture.

(This is a basic definition and you should read up more to understand it and your bear friends.)

adverse to physical exertion.

The #bear subculture celebrates such masculine traits while queering masculinity through the reputation of bears being affectionate, similar to how femme lesbians defy the heterocentric stereotype of lesbians being masculine by necessity and instead queer femininity.

Often, bear culture is associated with rural gay community, in which the idea of rugged traditional masculinity is considered both an ideal & a defiance of gay stereotypes that portray gay men as overwhelmingly thin, white, exceptionally well-groomed, lacking facial & body hair, and (cont)

#Bears tend to project the aesthetics of working-class manhood in their choices of self-expression, particularly through their personal grooming and appearance.

#Bears may be defined by physical appearance, tastes, expression of traditionally gendered traits, or personal affiliation.

The generic image of a bear is a larger man with a hairy body, usually having facial hair and dressing in a typically masculine way.

They say the black represents "our lust for the look and feel for shiny black rubber," the red symbolizes "our blood passion for rubber and rubbermen," while yellow highlights "our drive for intense rubber play and fantasies." The flag also features a literal kink in the stripes, for obvious reasons

Peter Tolos and Scott Moats created the design in 1995 "as a means to identifying like-minded men and [it] reflects the sensory, sensual, and mental passion we have for rubber."
