"Stan once asked me if the Sub-Mariner was gay (gay being a new word stan had picked up at the Playboy club), and some dizzy queen from the sticks had written in asking for if Kirby would do (for ANY PRICE ASKED) a rear view of Captain America in his boots and gloves and mask, but without his pants, and a front shot of Subby without his bathing suit ('but no erection, please — I am an art collector, and not a pervert'). I carefully explained to Stan that the Sub-Mariner ranked pretty high as an adolescent fag fantasy, his eyebrows did have a suspiciously plucked, not to mention down-right forties penciled-in look, and he spends most of his time wrestling with other guys.
