It’s crazy. These guys absolutely fucking hate sports. They’re constantly at war with the thing that is allegedly supposed to provide them with meaning and joy (and endless amounts of money).

Certainly not The Smashing Machine! Which had a very big star, a noteworthy director, some prestige from winning Venice, and the entire (famously effective) A24 marketing machine behind it.

Not defending Sweeney (who I don’t like as an actor) or the movie (haven’t seen it), but movies like this generally aren’t successful anymore anyway. But they also didn’t even try with this one.
