I love doing A-Z lists, and I've covered all of the genres I love over the years. I've even done a different Science Fiction A-Z back in 2019, but I figured it's time for an update! All of my picks are fairly recent books that I've read, or in some cases for the tough letters, I've found books on my TBR.

Some of my favorite science fiction stories are favorites because of the world building, so it was easy to come up with five books, but hard to decide which five to pick! These are mostly recent reads, with the exception of Borne, which I read back in 2017.

The nitty-gritty: A powerful grimoire is the catalyst for this magical, funny, feel-good fantasy. “Olive wore black sunglasses and a black trench coat over another completely black outfit. I wondered briefly what her closet looked like. I suspect it was like a small black hole. She could reach in and pull out anything, knowing it would match. Maybe she was onto something there.”

The nitty-gritty: A mysterious, secluded house traps a group of teens in this atmospheric, if somewhat uneven, YA horror story.  The Devouring Light had some very creepy and disturbing scenes, and in that respect it succeeded. However, it also fell into some well tread YA tropes, and I didn’t care much for the characters, so overall this was a mixed bag for me.

The nitty-gritty: Daniel Church takes on cosmic horror in this oppressive, dread-inducing tale full of eerie imagery and tension, perfect for horror fans looking for a unique story. The Sound of the Dark was not what I expected, and I’m happy to say that’s a good thing. Daniel Church has written a dark story about a podcaster who stumbles upon a dangerous set of cassette tapes while researching her latest project, only to find herself with a weird, terrifying infection.

The nitty-gritty: Christina Henry masterfully tackles the haunted house trope in this riveting coming-of-age story, infused with otherworldly terrors and heart-wrenching emotion. “Nobody ever said the house was dangerous—that is, beyond the obvious fact that it was an old, rotting house. More than one kid needed an extra tetanus shot after going in there, but nobody died. Nobody died until Paul.”

We are currently having lovely weather in the 70s, so I can't complain. I hope everyone had a nice Halloween! I bought a bunch of candy to donate to the businesses in our town, who all hand out candy on Halloween evening, instead of kids stumbling through the dark, steep mountain roads going house to house.

I always look forward to November, which is SciFi Month, but as usual, I have books from other genres that I'm excited to read as well. The nitty-gritty: A tense murder mystery/time travel story with a twist, Extremity is the perfect mash-up of noir vibes and futuristic elements. Extremity was such a nice surprise! I went into it fairly blind, so I’ll keep this short to avoid spoilers. This is my first time reading Nicholas Binge, and it won’t be my last. This is a sci-fi novella with a heavy police procedural element, and Binge’s characters have a sort of gritty, noir vibe to them.

The nitty-gritty: Cosmic horror and urban fantasy collide in Jim C. Hines' latest, a perfectly paced, heart-felt story with creepy monsters and humor galore. “The fourteen-inch Bowie had a bone handle and a blade sharp enough to cut a deal with a devil.” This is my first Jim C. Hines book, and boy, was this the perfect place to start! Slayers of Old is a richly imagined urban fantasy world with wonderful characters, plenty of danger, otherworldly terrors, laugh-out-loud dialog, and touching emotional moments.

The nitty-gritty: Ford, Neuland and Tilda are back for more paranormal action in this fun sequel to The Pale House Devil. The Flesh King is a fun sequel to Richard Kadrey’s The Pale House Devil, which I enjoyed a couple of years ago, and although this is a self contained story, I would recommend reading the series in order. The core idea is fantastic: we follow two paranormal hitmen, Ford and Neuland, and the twist is that Ford is alive but only kills the undead, and Neuland is dead (a revenant) and only kills the living.
