Enchanting the Fae Queen focuses on the second of the Queens of Villainy, Queen Lorelei of Balravia, who uses her schemes and feminine wiles to seduce—or at least aggravate–a High General, with whom she’s had an…interesting relationship for the last seven years.

The nitty-gritty: Laura Purcell delivers another chilling haunted house tale in this atmospheric and terrifying ghost story. “Their procession had a sick, decayed sort of grandeur to it. This was what it was, Belinda thought, to be master of The Bridge. A throne of rotten fruit and ashes.” House of Splinters is a companion novel to The Silent Companions and takes place about a hundred years prior to the main events in that book.

The nitty-gritty: Detour takes standard sci-fi tropes and twists them into a unique and outrageously entertaining story, complete with well developed characters and surprising emotional moments. The premise of Detour starts out in familiar territory: a rich billionaire is trying to fund the first trip to Saturn’s moon Titan, in hopes of finding a viable future home for humans. But the story takes a sharp left at about the 70% mark and ends up in a completely different place.

It's a three day weekend in the U.S.! It's also beautiful weather up here in the mountains, with temps in the 50s and 60s, so I'm pretty happy.

The nitty-gritty: Cottagecore meets The Lord of the Rings in this entertaining but slightly uneven debut. I couldn’t resist this adorable cover, which I’ll admit is one reason I wanted to read How to Lose a Goblin in Ten Days. And it was cute! There are also some rather weighty themes hovering over all the cuteness, and while these themes gave the story some depth, overall I didn’t fully embrace the mix of sweet cottagecore and the almost heavy-handed messages of prejudice and hate.

The nitty-gritty: A multilayered horror story set in a dangerous town, A Box Full of Darkness expertly mixes carefully drawn characters, emotional relationships and ghostly terrors. “This was Fell, the town of graves where they shouldn’t be and a missing girl’s shoes placed neatly outside her dorm room door. Fell, which had swallowed my little brother whole like a ravenous monster, like a great white whale…Fell was where your childhood night terrors had a taste and a smell.”

It has been COLD here, like highs in the 30s cold (I know that's nothing for some of you!). I'm surviving by wearing lots of layers (we don't run our heat all the time because it's so expensive).

The nitty-gritty: Mystery, romance and quirky characters make this a must read for readers who love their stories chock full of humor and hijinks. Once in a while I step outside my usual genres and try something different, and the end of the year/holiday season seemed like the perfect time for that. Definitely Maybe Not a Detective was a fun, twisty mystery with a bunch of heart and just a touch of romance.

The nitty-gritty: Seanan McGuire's long running series returns to its roots in this latest entry, where those who are "sure" can find their real homes behind magical doors. Seanan McGuire’s eleventh book in her popular Wayward Children series is almost like a reunion. If you’ve been missing some of your favorite characters from other books, there’s a good chance they might make an appearance here.

I read 113 books in 2025, and out of those, 31 were outstanding examples of speculative fiction, and yes, I've included all 31 on this list! St. Medard’s Bay wasn’t a town with one mystery—they were many, coiled around one another like the inside of a nautilus shell.”

I hope everyone had a nice New Years! Of course, I spent New Year's Eve watching the finale of Stranger Things. OMG it was so good!

2025 flew by, and it's time to share my reading challenge results. I'm pretty happy with everything except my TBR Jar challenge (a big fail!), but of course I'll probably try to do it again next year:-) I'm also sharing my final blog stats for the year at the end of this post. I also want to give a big thanks to everyone who visited my blog this year, left comments and likes, and perhaps even read a book I recommended.

Happy New Year! I'm feeling good about 2026, and I have a nice bunch of January releases coming up. I'm happy to say I've already read four of these and I'm currently reading a fifth, so I feel like the month is already off to a good start. Getting ahead will also leave room to read some February releases early (I hope!), and I'm trying to squeeze in a non review book each month if I can (check back later in the month for my 2026 reading and challenge goals).
