This is unconscionable. These people are being sentenced to an early death.

Worth mentioning: I'm coming for your goddamn quartz countertops www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...
Quartz countertops linked to deadly lung disease in workers who fabricate them
Skyrocketing demand for quartz countertops has increased workers' exposure to silica dust, a chemical compound that causes lung damage.

Respiratory therapists see the business end of when occupational safety fails. To describe this disease as forcing someone to suffocate is accurate, as the sensation is akin to having a belt tightened around your chest wall and trying to breathe. It turns brushing your teeth into VO2max cardio.

This is a disease where you slowly suffocate to death, and it is torture. There is no cure, and once diagnosed, your life expectancy is in the single digits. We talk about cancer, but we don't talk about occupational lung disease. I think fibrosis is worse than cancer.

Fibrosis is when lung tissue is slowly replaced by scar tissue. Asbestosis is a kind of fibrosis, caused by asbestos. Scar tissue doesn't stretch, so inhaling air requires more muscular work. It also thickens your membrane for gas exchange, meaning less of the air you inhale goes anywhere.

I didn't realize that mining less productive seams of coal would expose workers to more silica but it makes sense. More chaff vs wheat, to use a prairie analogy. The silica particulate is what gives workers silicosis, a type of occupational fibrosis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicosis

it in fact just inflates prices more by giving everyone more leverage
(what do we want to bet they won't exclude the investor class from accessing this cheaper leverage)

I can say we have had uninsured people decline care due to cost. There are Canadians who choose to opt out of the health insurance for ideological reasons. They sometimes have to make hard choices about how much care they can afford.

I also have to question the strategic wisdom of calling liars people whose jobs are public competitive knowledge-building, when they are engaging in acts of truth-telling from places where they will not be sanctioned professionally. Why do you want your academic-dissidents silenced? Cui bono?

We can't know the future and that means we have to try different things and see what works. History helps because of what worked in the past but our enemies can learn from history too and counter these strategies. It is necessary to move on all fronts.
