We found paradoxical effects of a previous pregnancy on the middle-aged brain depending on APOEe4 (genetic risk for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease) 🐁

I’ll be presenting some of this work and a follow-up study on Mon at 2pm during our FRS symposium at #AAIC25! Come say hi!! 👋

But... is this really the whole picture? What if our current understanding is biased toward knowledge from male models?

This work highlights the urgent need to examine how and why AD develops differently across sex. Understanding these differences will lead to better, more effective treatments.

This latest study reveals that male rats with a genetic risk for AD show changes in markers related to brain health that "make sense" - reduced neural stem cells and neurogenesis, which was associated with increased microglia - yet female rats showed completely different patterns of effects.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) disproportionately affects females, yet most research has focused on male models or not investigated the potential influences of sex. This has left critical gaps in our understanding of how AD risk and progression might be different across sexes.
