I actually think the typical narrative is too conspiratorial, but that's just what the American public is like in general over a wide range of topics. The more accurate stories are hardly more flattering but they don't exonerate suburban white people like conspiracy theories do.

Lots of essays aren't even persuasive in the way people appealing to them would hope so we end up on the level of "this reminded me of someone else's personal experience". Or the relevant portion is just some random paragraph better cited directly.

People defend that essay through authorial intent and identity or being evocative or being simply misunderstood, but without ascribing blame I think we can clearly conclude its legacy is deeply negative.
