In survey data, LGBT young people report consistently worse mental health than heterosexual young people. Whether this is because LGBT causes mental illness (i.e. the minority stress or anomie hypotheses), or because mental illness causes individuals to be LGBT is beyond the scope of this work.2 Footnote 2: Meyer, I.
