For bean chilis, Greens in SF has one of the all-time recipes for both flavor and simplicity. Really punches above its weight. altoonsultan.blogspot.com/2013/01/vege...
Vegetarian Black Bean Chili
During winter my appetite turns to soups and stews, and one of my favorite meals is a flavorful black bean chili, from the great Debor...

Do you believe in humoral theory?

If I saw that the evidence for some of my beliefs were as crummy as the “evidence” for religion is, I would, uh, not believe it anymore. They are making claims about the observable world. I wouldn’t say, well, it probably just works in mysterious ways or whatever

Yeah, I thought someone might say this. I’ve no doubt that some beliefs I have lack evidence. I draw a distinction between those & mysticism, which people have tried to prove for millennia & have come up with nothing 100% of the time. That’s not a lack of evidence, that’s evidence the answer is no

I don’t believe in things with no evidence. This has never seemed that hard to me - like, if there’s no evidence after thousands of years of people trying, that means it’s just not true, the same way anything else would be. But this is also my screen lock image so I may go harder on this than most

QT’s just trying to make himself feel better about how PTA made a better movie than he ever will.

The ironic thing is that I think there’s nothing the dem establishment would like more than to just get into power and not hold anyone to account. But republicans actually believe dems are meaningful oppo and so they are paranoid that there will be consequences, which incentivizes worse behavior

This is ridiculous in many ways but one of them is that Grok is actually more correct. Stalin developed the idea of “socialism in one country” after it was clear worldwide revolution wasn’t going to happen. Also Cuba wasn’t a communist revolution to start, Castro adopted it later. AI still sucks tho

The prose Edda was written in the 1200s, Tolkien obviously took the names deliberately. I remember a professor of mine positing that Tolkien wrote The Hobbit partially as a sort of joke answer to why someone named Gandalf - which means “wand-elf” - was listed here hanging with a bunch of dwarves

Yes, this was explicitly his project. Obviously A-S myth was a big part of LotR, but I also think he tried to incorporate the legendarium organically into pre-existing myths of many Northern European cultures. You see this tons with language and poetry in the books. For example, from the prose Edda:

Nothing really, as long as Patrick Fabian gets Sokolnikov.

But then I would just want Tony Dalton for Trotsky

This is such a bizarre thing to do. He makes up a new word, you say you’re “genuinely curious” to hear more about what he thinks it means, and he uses that as evidence that to say users are close-minded and cloistered.

All Eyes on Me makes me think about the seductive nature of despair. He’s luring himself into this soft, lulling place where “everybody knows” and he doesn’t need to explain anything. Or maybe it’s where “everybody knows everybody,” this weird comfortable place that might just be inside his own mind

I dearly love both Can’t Handle This and All Eyes on Me. CHT captures the indignation and bargaining that accompanies regret so well - the repetition of what he would have done *if he had known* is so real, as is blaming the burrito expert for not warning him. Getting what you want and regretting it

Slander. I spent a whole semester of my life making sandwiches in bowdoin’s dining hall and can confirm I never made anything more exciting than pb&j with raspberry instead of strawberry jam

ultimately responsible for Stalin kicking out Trotsky and then adopting Trotsky’s Left Opposition’s proposals around collectivization (which became de-kulakization). How do you export enough grain to make enough money to afford the equipment that will help you grow enough grain to export?
