America is a throwaway culture. People are subject to planned obsolescence like TV sets, fridges, cars. Young people learning a trade need to learn something else, too--flexibility, how to teach themselves new skills, judgement, critical thinking. Learning to weld is good, but not enough.

People who cannot be happy alone with themselves, people constantly spreading their discontent to others, people lacking imagination, afraid of their own thoughts, people constantly needing the attention and emotional approval from others, these are pretty miserable people.
